They paid the price for doing so: The album fell on its face and critics cited it as the death knell for the band. This week's release -- and the band's first since that time -- may reverse many of those opinions. Playing the Angel plays like classic DM: synthy, brooding and brimming with emotion (however bluntly voiced it may be). The result is that, although many of their fans continue to think of them as a lesser-known gem, this Scottish duo currently sits at the forefront of ambient electronica. A skilled director, awesome performances from a talented cast (save perhaps that of Krazy Katie Holmes) and the contrasting historical backdrop of less successful handlings of the same subject matter (namely Joel Schumacher's sloppy stabs at the franchise) combined to make Batman Begins the best blockbuster of 2005. There are more than enough bonus features here to warrant the second disc. Pretty much every phase of production gets its own featurette, including those focused on the Batsuit, the use of miniatures, story development, and lead Christian Bale's unbelievable physical transformation from his preceding role in The Machinist. Despite the success of recent predecessors Shaun of the Dead and 28 Days Later, Land of the Dead did not fare well at the box office, and this is a shame. Yes, at heart it's a B-movie, but one infused with the same humor and wry social commentary that have made director George A. Romero's other flicks horror classics. Moss unwisely lets his greed guide him, and the result is a whole lot more bodies. No Country for Old Men isn't all blood and guts; as with most of McCarthy's yarns, there is an underlying morality tale cast between the two main protagonists. In this instance, however, it's a largely ineffective one, with the inner monologues betraying its contrived nature. This one's a superb read, but best left as a surface one.
